Bright arches and Merrithew reformers at The Reformr Pilates Studio, Shams Boutik

Never been on a reformer? You’re in good company. Every one of our clients started with a first class — and most tell us they wish they’d started sooner.

This guide covers everything a beginner needs to know about Reformer Pilates at The Reformr Pilates Studio on Al Reem Island: what the machine is, how to start, what to wear and how to progress.

What is a reformer?

The reformer is a bed-like frame with a padded carriage that glides along rails. Springs underneath add resistance — or support — as you move. At one end sits a footbar to press against; at the other, straps for your hands or feet.

At our studio you’ll train on Merrithew® V2 Max reformers. For a deeper dive into the machine and the method, read What is Reformer Pilates?

Why the reformer suits beginners

Here’s the secret: the springs work both ways. They can make an exercise harder, or they can help you through it. That means one machine can challenge a seasoned athlete and gently support someone who is new to exercise.

Reformer Pilates is also low-impact. There’s no jumping or running, and many exercises are done lying down, seated or kneeling, so you can focus on control, alignment and breath. Your instructor adjusts the springs for you and offers options for every level.

How to start at The Reformr

Book a Beginner Reformr. class — it’s designed for people with no Pilates experience at all.

The easiest first step is a tryout class: AED 145, valid for two weeks, so you can choose a time that suits you. Book online or in The Reformr app, and explore all our Reformer Pilates classes.

When you book, tell us about any injuries or health conditions so your instructor can adapt your workout. If you’re pregnant, congratulations! Pre-natal clients need approval from their doctor before joining a Reformer Pilates class.

Ladies-only or mixed?

Both. At Shams Boutik we run ladies-only and mixed classes, so you can choose the atmosphere you’re most comfortable in. The class type is shown on the schedule when you book.

What to wear

  • Fitted, comfortable clothing that lets you move freely. Loose clothes can catch on the springs and straps.
  • Grip socks — they’re required on the reformer.
  • A bottle of water.

Arrive early

For your first class, arrive ten minutes early. Your instructor will welcome you, set up your reformer and show you the basics before class begins.

After that, aim to arrive at least five minutes before every class: classes build progressively to warm up the body, and clients arriving more than five minutes late for a group class can’t be admitted. Our studio policies cover cancellations, late arrivals and waitlists.

How often should you do Reformer Pilates?

Two to three classes a week is a great rhythm. It’s enough to build strength, flexibility and body awareness steadily, while leaving time for your muscles to recover between sessions.

Consistency matters more than intensity. A regular routine will take you further than an occasional hard session.

When to move up a level

There’s no fixed timeline — everyone progresses differently. The best approach is simply to ask your instructor. They see how you move every class and will tell you when you’re ready for more.

When you are, our class types give you plenty to explore:

  • Core Reformr. — deep core strength and stability.
  • Intermediate Reformr. — longer flows and more challenging springs.
  • Booty Reformr. — a lower-body focus for glutes and legs.
  • Athletic Reformr. — our most dynamic class, with strength and coordination at pace.

Reformer Pilates packages

Once you’ve tried a class, a package brings the price per class down:

  • 4 classes — AED 500, valid for 6 weeks
  • 8 classes — AED 980, valid for 10 weeks
  • 16 classes — AED 1,950, valid for 18 weeks

Curious about Lagree too? Our Mixed package works for Reformer Pilates or Lagree at both studios. See all prices and packages.
